South Schleswig - Your center (incl. UNESCO World Heritage Site Haithabu)
Gottorf Castle
From the Vikings and Danes to the people of Schleswig and Gottorf, via the Dutch to Kaiser Wilhelm; this Schleswig-Holstein tour covers a large part of Schleswig-Holstein’s diverse history. We start with the Vikings of the 8th and 9th centuries in Haithabu, one of the most important Viking settlements, and also take a look at the Danewerk, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2018. This Schleswig-Holstein tour continues on to Schleswig and Gottorf Castle. This former moated castle at the end of the Schlei now houses the State Archaeological Museum, among other things, and is still wonderful to look at despite being around 800 years old.
Idyllic Friedrichstadt
The route then takes us across Holstein to the castle outside Husum, which has been the only remaining castle on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein since the 16th century. Today, the Renaissance castle mainly serves as a venue for cultural events such as concerts, theater performances and exhibitions. I will accompany you on your Schleswig-Holstein tour to Friedrichstadt, where you will immediately notice the connection to the Netherlands. Founded in the 17th century by a Duke of Gottorf, this town is now an important cultural monument. Lunch can be planned in this idyllic little town, depending on your plans for the day.
The transporter bridge in Rendsburg
The route then continues along the – now imaginary – border between Schleswig and Holstein to Rendsburg, to the ship welcome facility on the Kiel Canal. Since 1997, Kaiser Wilhelm’s pride and joy has also had a ship welcome facility directly at the transporter bridge in Rendsburg, where passing ships can be observed very closely. Alternatively, if the canal is not very busy, you can visit Rendsburg’s old town. But the canal itself is also a prominent point in Schleswig-Holstein’s history. To get back to Haithabu or Schleswig after these impressions, we still need a little time to deal with any questions that may have arisen and perhaps work out a new route.
